Dental CE Live Online InteractiveCourse Description: Live, interactive, online webinar course accessed from a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, iPad, or iPhone and internet connection. With the digital age and implementation of electronic health records, dental practices have become a target of cyber security attacks. This live, online class provides the dentist, dental hygienist, and dental assistant with comprehensive training to protect their patients' confidential electronic records from cyber security breaches. Specific strategies and protocol to prevent phishing, hacking, and ransomware attacks will be discussed, and practical steps will be highlighted for use in the protection of electronic health records. Security breaches can be costly to the dentist, and may expose the clinician to HIPAA fines and potential criminal penalties. As investigated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR), the University of Washington Medicine recently paid a $750,000 settlement for charges that it potentially violated the HIPAA Security Rule, following an online security breach that exposed the e-PHI of approximately 90,000 individuals. These patient records were violated by an email virus that was downloaded by an unsuspecting employee. In this case, cyber security staff training could have been used as a preventive tool to thwart this cyber-attack. (Full description, bio, disclosure)
