Course Description A live, online, fully Interactive Dental CE class to promote the role and responsibility of dental providers in recognizing child abuse and neglect. Over 3 million children are abused or neglected in the U.S. each year. Tragically, it is estimated as many as 1500 children per year die from abuse, and this statistic may be grossly under-reported by 50%. The average age of an abused child is three years old. Dentists reported less than 1% of total cases. Dental providers are "Mandated Reporters" including dentists, dental hygienists, and licensed dental assistants. Data reviewed by Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston, found that more than 65% of all abuse cases to children involved head, neck, or mouth injuries. Abusers will often change physicians and emergency rooms, but most will stay with the same dentist for treatment. Therefore, dental clinicians are well positioned to recognize signs of child abuse and neglect. (Full description, disclosure, bio)
